Kelly Troester and Cary Leibowitz, Phillips’ Worldwide Co-Directors of Editions, said, “As we approach the tenth anniversary of the first Editions sale at Phillips, the demand for prints and multiples is stronger than ever. Rare and important Modern and Contemporary works performed well across the board. Today’s auction was led by two iconic Andy Warhol works – Moonwalk, which realized $300,000, and Superman from Myths, which realized $218,750, setting a new auction record for the print. We also set new record prices for prints by Gerhard Richter, Pablo Picasso, David Hockney, Ed Ruscha, Henri Matisse and Cy Twombly in the Evening Sale; and for works by Josef Albers, Jean Dubuffet, M.C. Escher, Philip Guston, Sam Francis, Yoshitomo Nara, and Harland Miller in the Day sessions. We saw vibrant enthusiasm online (75% of lots had online bids), in the saleroom and heavy activity on the phone banks. Phillips Editions worldwide achieved sales just shy of $20 million in 2017 and sold 90% of the 1300 total lots offered. After the strength of this year for the category, we look forward to our first Editions auction of 2018 in London on 25 January.”
