NEW YORK – 30 OCTOBER 2015 – Phillips is proud to present “Rhythm, Color, and Light: Abstraction from Latin America”, an exhibition of twenty works drawn from the Phillips Latin American Art auction to be held in New York on 18 November 2015. The exhibition will be on view November 3-8 at 160 NE 40th Street in the Miami Design District.

Spanning over 50 years, “Rhythm, Light and Color” brings modern masterpieces like Carmen Herrera’s Basque (1965) together with exciting new names in contemporary art. In addition to displaying intergenerational exchange between artists, this exhibition engages the viewer with works that range from intimate to monumental.

Large installations such as Ernesto Neto’s Quarks-Paff (1998) demand the viewer’s sensory immersion through scale as much as scent, while works like Gego’s notebook Lineas (1966) offer a controlled and intimate exploration of line through the realm of a book. Many works in this exhibition are united by an interest in examining spatial relationships through the exploration of color and light. Works by Sandu Darie, Carlos Cruz-Diez, and Mathias Goeritz—though distinct in their use and integration of materials—are similar in their active interaction with their surrounding space. The sale of Umbra 53, a stunning work by Colombian artist, Olga de Amaral, will go to benefit Vivarte, a philanthropic organization that supports children and artists in Colombia. Together the works in this exhibition underscore the varied trajectory of abstraction and bridge the sensory, spatial, and political underpinnings of a region in impactful ways.

“We are delighted to showcase the strength of the upcoming Phillips Latin America sale in Miami, a city that has become Latin America’s nexus with the United States and a vibrant region of art collecting in our field” said Kaeli Deane, Head of Sale, Latin American Art. “The works on view reveal the depth and breadth of abstraction in Latin American art and demonstrate Phillips’ commitment to this genre.”
