HONG KONG - 29 NOVEMBER 2016 - Phillips, in Association with Bacs & Russo, consolidated its position as the world’s leading watch auction house, concluding the fall season of sales in Asia with The Hong Kong Watch Auction: THREE. Combined with the Rolex Milestones sale the night before, Phillips achieved HK$197,337,500 / US$25,436,804, the highest result for any watch auction held in a season in Asia for 2016. As the global watch auctions come to a close for 2016, Phillips is proud to have broken the US$100 million milestone for an annual sale total, in only the second year since the watch department’s inception.
Multiple world records were achieved, and amongst them, two world records were set for a cloisonne enamel “time-only” wristwatch, and a Suzanne Rohr Patek Philippe enamel watch sold at auction. The demand for timepieces of the upmost rarity and importance was particularly evident with the top lot, a Patek Philippe Reference 2419 in yellow gold, retailed by Cartier, selling for HK$9,800,000 / US$1,263,220, the highest price for any wristwatch sold in Asia this season.
Sam Hines, International Head of Watches and Deputy Chairman, Asia, said: “Collectors across the world came together at Phillips Hong Kong to celebrate two centuries of watch making. Patek Philippe dominates the top ten of this sale, as we saw notable high performances for enamel pocket watches, with a pair of historical Patek Philippe minute repeaters selling for over US$1.7 million. Our international team's relentless focus on quality and scholarship continues to bring together exceptional offerings in this sale, during which we welcomed bidders from six continents and across Asia.”
Aurel Bacs, Auctioneer and Senior Consultant, said: “In a domain where scholarship matters to the full extent, Phillips has once again taken the world by storm with a record breaking sale. Following the stellar results of Geneva, where Phillips established a new world record for any wristwatch sold at auction, we have continued the success only two weeks later in Hong Kong. This shows the international nature of our department, its broad outreach to the global watch community, and consistent approach to innovation, scholarship, quality, and client service.”
