James Rosenquist, F-111 (south) (west) (north) (east) (G. 73), 1974
SOLD FOR $228,600
Kelly Troester and Cary Leibowitz, Deputy Chairmen and Co-Heads of Editions, said, “The enthusiasm for Phillips’ first New York auctions of the year was electric, as our two Editions sales saw enthusiastic bidding from across the globe. Between a full saleroom, spirited online bidding, and strong activity from the phones, collectors vied for prints and multiples spanning the wide variety of material the category has to offer. Our Various Owners sale was led by Damien Hirst’s Virtues, which realized $152,400, and we also saw strong prices for Pop and Surrealist works from the Robert Bechtle and Whitney Chadwick Trust, as well as prints by Roy Lichtenstein, Louise Nevelson, and Alex Katz. The momentum only strengthened as we headed into the afternoon sale of Works from the James Rosenquist Estate. The white glove sale saw some of his most iconic works soar past their estimates with 42% of the sale setting new world record prices, including the monumental F-111, which achieved $228,600, nearly eight times its estimate. Other strong prices were obtained for Small Doorstop with $95,250 and The Bird of Paradise Approaches the Hot Water Planet, from Welcome to the Water Planet, which garnered five and a half times its estimate at $44,450, among many others. It is wonderful to see such reverence in the market for Rosenquist’s oeuvre and legacy, and we were honored to work with his Estate in giving these works the recognition and platform they so clearly deserve. We look forward to our spring Editions and Works on Paper auction 16-18 April on Park Avenue.”
