Rebekah Bowling and John McCord, Co-Heads of Phillips’ 20th Century & Contemporary Art Day Sale, said, “The middle market continues to grow exponentially, with today’s result marking the highest total for a Day Sale in Phillips’ history – a record we have broken season on season. Our Morning and Afternoon Sessions brought together fresh-to-market works with exceptional provenance, drawing participation from around the globe. Works from the collection of Florence Knoll Bassett performed exceptionally well, with Josef Albers’ Homage to the Square: Silent Gray leading the auction at $1,316,000. There was particularly fierce competition for Jaume Plensa’s Twins I and II, as well as Dorothea Rockburne’s Oxymoron, both of which set auction records for the artists. This steadfast and robust area of the market remains a vibrant area for collectors across the globe, and we are confident this momentum will continue into 2020.”
