Nine New Auction Records Set, Including those for Xie Lei, Cathrin Hoffmann, and Gary Simmons
London, 6 December 2023 Sale Total: £4,253,935 / $5,361,660 / € 4,966,044
Charlotte Gibbs, Associate Specialist, Head of New Now, said, “We are pleased with today's result of over £4.2 million. The prices realised emphasise the steady global demand for both established artists and contemporary talents. We saw strong depth of bidding from over 600 participants taking part in the sale from 46 countries worldwide. Our top ten features renowned names such as Peter Halley, Andy Warhol and Robert Colescott, alongside cutting-edge artists such as Emma Webster and Chloe Wise. Five artists made their auction debut, and nine auction records were achieved for artists including Xie Lei, among others. Wynnie Mynerva’s auction debut result of £139,700 is particularly exciting. The enthusiasm for Gary Simmons' Bows and Bones, which features in the top ten, propelled it past the £20,000 high estimate to an impressive £114,300, surpassing the previous record set last month. Phillips remains at the forefront of emerging and contemporary art with New Now a cornerstone of the category. We are thrilled to conclude Phillips' live auction season in London on such a positive note and look forward to carrying this momentum into our London 20th Century and Contemporary Art spring sales.”
