Four Live Sales Set to Take Place Globally, Including the Inaugural Editions, Photographs and Design Auction in Hong Kong, the Second Annual Dedicated Sale of Pablo Picasso: Paper and Clay in London, and the Seasonal Sales of Prints and Multiples in London and New York

 

      

 

 

 

LONDON, HONG KONG & NEW YORK– 21 MAY 2024 – Phillips is pleased to announce the global schedule for Editions live auctions taking place in June. The upcoming month will feature four sales in London, Hong Kong, and New York. The month will begin with the second annual Pablo Picasso: Paper and Clay Auction in London, which will take place on 6 June and will be followed immediately by the London Evening & Day Editions Auction on 6 & 7 June. The inaugural Editions, Photographs and Design Auction in Hong Kong will take place on 14 June. The final Editions live sale of the season will be the Editions & Works on Paper Auction in New York on 27 June.

Reflecting on our achievements in 2023 - a record-breaking 11 global editions auctions, totaling over $37 million, with 91% of lots sold, 382 world records, and 334 new-to-market works - we solidifed our position as market leader and underscored our commitment to celebrating editions as a significant collecting category. We saw enthusiastic participation from across the globe, with strong prices for 20th century and contemporary names alike. Building on that success and with four auctions already complete in 2024, totalling $12.2 million thus far, we are excited to maintain this momentum as we look forward to our four live auctions in June."

 

Pablo Picasso: Paper and Clay | 6 June 2024 | London

Following the success of the inaugural Pablo Picasso: Paper and Clay auction in 2023, Phillips' London Editions department have introduced a dedicated Picasso auction to the annual schedule. Now a regular fixture in Phillips' London sales calendar, this standalone auction presents a diverse array of prints and ceramic works at various price points. Highlighting the ingenuity of Picasso’s edition-making, from his explorations of mythology and his charming flora and fauna motifs, to bullfighting scenes and his innovations in portraiture on paper and in clay, this sale pays homage to one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Evening & Day Editions | 6 & 7 June 2024 | London

The Evening & Day Editions auction in London on 6 & 7 June will showcase over 300 works, from the vibrant iconic Pop Art of Keith Haring and Andy Warhol to Jean-Michel Basquiat’s striking abstract portraiture, and the rhythmic geometric patterns of Bridget Riley’s early Op Art, alongside a selection of genre-defying prints and multiples by Gerhard Richter.

 

Leading the sale is Keith Haring’s Dog from 1986, featuring his celebrated barking dog motif which originated in the artist’s subway drawings of the early 1980s. Through his distinctive use of bright lines and energetic figures, Haring transformed mundane advertisements into dynamic works of art which shone a light on social commentary, conveying messages of unity and defiance against societal injustices, including AIDS, racism, and homophobia.

A further Pop highlight of the sale is Andy Warhol’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II from his 1985 series Reigning Queens, which showcases his fascination with fame and consumer culture through appropriation of widely circulated royal images. Further highlights of the sale include Jean-Michel Basquiat’s Cabeza, David Hockney’s Lithographic Water Made of Lines, Andy Warhol’s $, a rare early Bridget Riley print, Richard Serra’s Finally Finished III, and works by Damien Hirst alongside by a curated selection of editions by Gerhard Richter. Editions, Photographs and Design Auction | 14 June 2024 | Hong Kong

Phillips is pleased to introduce a new cross-category sale, Editions, Photographs, and Design, which will take place in Hong Kong on the 14 June. The Editions section in the sale will feature an extensive selection of works by sought-after artists alongside emerging names, with a strong focus on Asian Modern masters and Contemporary talents, including Sanyu, Wu Guanzhong, Yayoi Kusama, Yoshitomo Nara, Takashi Murakami, Zeng Fanzhi and Huang Yuxing. A leading highlight is Damien Hirst’s The Virtues (H. 9), which is inspired by Bushidō, the Japanese samurai code of ethics.

A standout highlight of the sale is Andy Warhol’s Diamond Dust Shoes (F. & S. II.257), from 1980. Further sale highlights include Yoshitomo Nara’s Walk On, which depicts Nara’s iconic little girl with almond shaped eyes and a menacing smile set in a hard straight line. Yayoi Kusama’s A Pumpkin (RT) brings together three of Kusama’s most recognisable motifs: a pumpkin, dots, and infinity nets. Additional works on offer include Jonas Wood’s Fish Pot; Matisse Pot 4; and Snoopy Pot. Wood’s incorporation of ceramic vessels into his body of work stems from his collaborative working relationship with his wife, the ceramic artist Shio Kusaka. Editions & Works on Paper | 27 June 2024 | New York

New York concludes the global June Editions sales with a diverse array of over 170 lots, spanning from Winslow Homer’s Eight Bells to KAWS’s NO REPLY set from 2015, which headlines the auction. Raymond Pettibon’s dynamic 2019 No Title (Hermosa Beach), showcases the artist’s iconic surf scenes, reflecting his connection to Southern California's coastal culture. Roy Lichtenstein’s Bicentennial Print captures the artist’s vision for America’s 200th anniversary, featuring industrialism, technology, and architecture. Continuing with the patriotic sentiment, Andy Warhol’s Uncle Sam, from the Myths portfolio, reflects Warhol’s fascination with celebrity and his connection to Post-War American life. Multiples broaden the sale’s scope, with offerings such as Alyson Shotz’s Eccentric Orbit, Julian Opie’s Coffee lenticular with optical effects, and Laurie Simmon and Peter Wheelwright’s imaginative Kaleidoscope House completing the selection, providing collectors with new perspectives on what it means to be an edition.

Carmen Herrera’s complete triptych Verde y Negro debuts at auction, showcasing her signature crisp lines and contrasting planes. Anni Albers seamlessly transitions her Bauhaus Weaving Workshop background to printmaking, exemplified by her lithographs TR I and TR II. This sale brings post-war printmakers such as Barnett Newman, Agnes Martin, Kenneth Noland, Donald Judd, and Josef Albers into conversation with contemporary variations on abstraction from Imi Knoebel, Sean Scully, and Christopher Wool, creating a robust visual primer on the artistic movement as it has evolved over the decades.
