Phillips to Showcase Thierry Noir in Summer

Dropshop and Solo Selling Exhibition in New York

Original Paintings and Editioned Works from Noir’s Gold Series to be Offered Across Multiple Phillips Platforms

NEW YORK – 18 JULY 2024 – This summer, Phillips is proud to showcase Thierry Noir as the July Dropshop artist alongside a solo exhibition taking place at Phillips’ 432 Park Avenue international headquarters. Noir rose to worldwide acclaim in 1984 as the first person to paint murals on the Berlin Wall, with his works becoming integral to the cultural zeitgeist of Berlin in the 1980s. Now, Noir has created new artworks for Dropshop and a PhillipsX selling exhibition from his acclaimed Gold Series. Both the Drop and the exhibition, entitled Thierry Noir: Gold, will open on 25 July, with the works on Dropshop marking the first editioned artworks by Noir in eight years and the first time that works from a PhillipsX selling exhibition will be available for purchase using the same ‘Buy Now’ model as Dropshop.

Thierry Noir said, “Art and sport both have the power to break down barriers and dissolve political divisions. Sport also talks to the young people and it is very important to me to reach the younger generations with my art.”

In Gold, Thierry Noir points out the commonalities between sport and art. Whether physical, emotional, or imaginative, each Gold artwork is a full expression of human potential. Gold began in 2020 as a series of 16-inch tondo studies on canvas, each depicting one of Noir’s playful signature characters performance of a sporting discipline. The next year, the artist created digital animations from this source material and the animations were installed on enormous screens in cities, including Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, New York, Seoul, Shanghai, and Tokyo. The exhibition at Phillips, which is open from 25 July through 10 August, will offer 35 original paintings from the acclaimed series, across multiple formats, circular and square, and in a variety of sizes.

Noir’s Gold editions for Dropshop offer new mediums for the series that are exclusive to the platform. A suite of four ukiyo-e prints produced at the Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints in Tokyo will be available, along with screenprint editions produced in London. Noir’s ukiyo-e suite of Skateboarding, made using 400 year old traditional methods, is from an edition of 25 and will be offered for $5,000. The suite reflects the internationalism of the Gold project and a striking contrast between the old and new.

In Noir’s own words, his art was “born for screenprinting with the bright colors and shapes surrounded by the black line.” Created with master printers in London using an only analogue process, Boxing, BMX Racing, Surfing, and Trampoline are each depicted, with each sport presented in four colorways of blue, orange, pink, and teal. Also hailing from an edition of 25, the 16 different screenprints will be offered individually with a price of $1,800.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Thierry Noir (born 1958) is a globally renowned visual artist who originally rose to prominence by illicitly painting large stretches of the Berlin Wall during the Cold War. Noir’s objective was to perform one real revolutionary act: to paint the Berlin Wall, to transform it, and to help destroy it.

Noir’s iconic style has a strong emphasis upon line and reduces forms to their most basic elements originally reflecting the exigencies of painting quickly within a hazardous environment. Noir’s vividly colorful imagery captured the zeitgeist of 1980s Berlin and has since become widely known throughout the world. With an artistic career now spanning five decades, Noir remains as active as ever on the international stage.
