PhillipsX presents Stillness: Hammershøi and American Minimalism, featuring works by the Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershøi from the turn of the last century, alongside major American Minimalists Anni Albers, Robert Mangold, Agnes Martin, and Kenneth Noland, among others.

Hammershøi took radical steps towards diluting his subject matters to their barest essentials, suffusing his work with a wholly unique atmosphere. He employed a minimalist palette to create interior scenes that, to this day, surprise the viewer with their modern sensibility.

Stillness exhibits Hammershøi’s remarkable paintings alongside another group of artists radical within the framework of their own historical moments, the American Minimalists. These artists working from the 1950s into the later twentieth century similarly distilled their compositions to the purest of formal elements, eliminating figuration, representation, and symbolism. Through their art-making, both Hammershoi and the American Minimalists sought a separate stillness that boldly questioned inherited norms of art and representation.
