Catalogue Essay
• This year marks the 250th anniversary of the legendary watchmaking brand, Breguet. Since its founding, watch enthusiasts have been enthralled with the technical skills and masterful craftsmanship of its founder Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747-1823). He was one of the leading watchmakers of his time and many of his horological innovations are still as sought after today as they were in the 18th and 19th centuries. Breguet is renowned for inventing the tourbillon complication with his first patent for it filed in 1801, and a complication used by countless brands today. The tourbillon solved positional errors caused by gravititational forces on the balance wheel and hairspring. The continual rotation of the tourbillon carriage holding the escapement averages out its errors.

• The reference 5497, part of the Héritage collection, was first release in 2008 in both pink gold and platinum models and is highlighted by the engraved “Brevet du 7 Messidor An 9”, or in the Gregorian calendar, June 26th, 1801 representative of his patent for this unique invention. The tonneau-shaped case has a silvered gold guilloché dial with applied Roman numerals and classic blue steel Breguet hands. This rare and charismatic watch is offered in excellent condition and is a testament to the ingenuity of the master watchmaker and the history of Breguet.

Breguet

Swiss | 1775
Established in 1775 by Abraham Louis Breguet, widely considered the greatest watchmaker of all time, the storied brand continues to thrive in the modern era, creating exceptional high-end watches as the Swatch Group's premier prestige brand. Some of the most important and lasting inventions in watchmaking are attributed to Abraham Louis Breguet, including the tourbillon, shock resistance and the use of hammers and gongs employed in nearly all minute repeating watches made since.

Eighteenth and nineteenth century Breguet pocketwatches are especially sought-after by collectors, and many of them were made for the elite of European society, including Napoléon and Marie Antoinette. Key wristwatches from the twentieth century include oversized dress watches, two-register chronographs, triple calendars and Type XX aviator's chronographs made for the French military and civilians.
