Among his most iconic and consequential creations is the Chronomètre à Résonance, launched at the dawn of the new millennium. Its genesis traces back to 1983, when François-Paul Journe, inspired by the 18th-century pioneer Antide Janvier, first undertook the challenge of harnessing the resonance phenomenon in a pocket watch. Success came, but it would take more than seventeen years of refinement before this groundbreaking mechanism was miniaturized into the wristwatch we recognize today: the Chronomètre à Résonance.

A world premiere, it is the first wristwatch to feature two entirely independent balances working in sympathetic resonance. Beating in opposite directions, they naturally correct each other’s minor variations, achieving a remarkable stability and precision. The dial elegantly underscores this duality: two separate time displays, each with its own small seconds, flank a central power-reserve indicator styled after historic marine chronometers. Notably, its scale is reversed, indicating not the hours remaining, but the hours elapsed since last wound, a detail that underscores the watch’s thoughtful, technical narrative.

The present example from circa 2008, is rendered in a 40mm platinum case with a highly coveted salmon dial. While most of the example that grace the market are cased in pink with a salmon dial, the platinum case version is only the 5th to appear publicly. Offered in excellent overall condition and complete with its full set of accessories, this Résonance is one of the most sought-after configurations.

F.P. Journe

Swiss | 1999

Founded by watchmaker François-Paul Journe in 1999, the F.P. Journe brand is relatively young, but already is as highly regarded by collectors as many distinguished manufacturers with centuries-old heritage. In the minds of the world's savviest collectors, Journe is producing some of the finest wristwatches the market has ever seen. Mastering his craft from restoring historical timepieces, he was the first to create a wristwatch incorporating two escapements that benefit from the phenomenon of resonance — the Chronomètre à Résonance.

Key models include the Résonance, tourbillon wristwatches incorporating a remontoir and the limited edition Vagabondage series. Especially sought-after are his earliest "souscription" watches, made in 1999.
