Good to know:
- One of only 18 examples made
- Stone marquetry dial with hand-painted miniature work.
- Inspired by Copernicus and the heliocentric revolution
Unveiled at Baselworld 2016, the "Center of the Universe Sun" is nothing less than a revolution in thought. For centuries, geocentrism had placed Earth at the center of all things. Then came Nicolaus Copernicus, the Polish astronomer whose groundbreaking theory repositioned the Sun as a fixed point around which the Earth and other planets revolve.
Copernicus spoke of a "24-hour renaissance"—the time it takes for the Earth to rotate on its axis and begin a new day. On the dial of this remarkable wristwatch, Girard-Perregaux gives that renaissance visual form. The Sun, rendered in warm, incandescent tones, becomes the gravitational and aesthetic center of a miniature universe. To achieve this, the manufacture assembled a palette of rare and luminous stones: orange aventurine captures the Sun's radiant energy; grey jade provides grounding contrast; while alternating shades of dark and pale orange jasper, along with cornelian, introduce depth and warmth. These materials are sculpted, polished, and arranged in a mosaic that recalls the patient artistry of Renaissance intarsia. The final touches come from the hand of a miniature painter, elevating the work from exceptional craftsmanship to genuine artistry.
Housed within a 40.00mm 18k pink gold case—a signature of Girard-Perregaux's 1966 collection—the watch is powered by the in-house caliber GP03300-0060, a self-winding mechanical movement with a 46-hour power reserve. The transparent case back offers a view of this precise and reliable engine, grounding the cosmic artistry of the dial in the very terrestrial virtues that have defined Girard-Perregaux since 1791.
