Catalogue Essay
- In the world of contemporary independent watchmaking, few names resonate with such purity of vision as Hajime Asaoka. Known internationally for his rarefied tourbillons and chronographs, Asaoka has, through his Kurono Tokyo line, created an avenue to share his design philosophy with a wider audience.
- The 34mm Calligra Special Project, launched in 2024, is a striking example: compact, refined, and defined by Asaoka’s hand-drawn reinterpretation of classic Breguet numerals. Trained in calligraphy, Asaoka returned to his roots to sketch each numeral by hand, echoing the artisanal origins of Breguet’s design. This personal process imbues the dials with balance and fluidity, preserving the warmth of handwriting in a mechanical object.
- Three editions were produced with each limited to 188 examples: a silvery-white dial with black numerals, a black lacquered dial with white numerals, and the distinctive Dark MOP edition (present example), featuring a shimmering mother of pearl centre. All share a 34mm polished steel case with domed sapphire crystal, blue IP plated luminous hands, and a sculpted stepped bezel inspired by 1920s–30s wristwatches.
- Powering the watch is the Miyota 90S5 automatic calibre, chosen for reliability and precision, allowing Asaoka to concentrate on case and dial artistry.
- The present “Dark MOP” example is offered in “like-new” condition with its full set of accessories.
