Catalogue Essay
This print originates probably between February and mid-June of 1915 when, as a volunteer assistant to the medical corps of the German army, the artist served in Belgium. For most of this time - from after about late March - his post was Verwicz, Belgium, where he was commissioned to paint a mural in a soldiers' bathhouse (Göpel 186), destroyed during the First World War. It is known that during this Belgian stay he was able to visit Brussels, Ghent, Lille and Ostende. The edition was probably printed in Brussels.
