- Combination of cloisonné, flinqué enamel and miniature painting
Released at the Patek Philippe Watch Art Grand Exhibition Tokyo in 2023 as part of the Rare Handcrafts edition, Patek Philippe celebrated one of Japan’s most iconic tradition, the Kimono. A Japanese garment since the Heian period (794-1185), it is not only a canvas for artist to weave out the most poetic art forms and graphics, it is also a symbol of heritage and often passed down generations as family heirlooms.
The Calatrava ref. 5077/100R was produced in only 10 pieces within two dial variations. Each conjure the refinement of kimono fabrics through the art of enameling. Each petal of the floral motif is shaped vividly by cloisonné enamel. The charming fabric texture is done with flinqué enamel with shades of red shining through the translucent enamel. Each dial underwent from 12 to 14 firings at temperatures ranging from 800°C to 840°C.
Sized at 38mm the pink gold case is set with 112 diamonds (0.87 ct) and paired with a matching buckle that sparkles with 29 diamonds (0.24 ct). To the best of our knowledge, the present piece is the first example to appear in the auction market.
