Roger Smith stands today as the flagbearer of British high horology—quietly and steadfastly crafting mechanical marvels from his workshop on the Isle of Man. Production is famously scarce, with just 15 watches leaving his bench each year—not by marketing design, but simply because true handcraft at this level cannot be rushed.

As the only apprentice ever taken under the wing of the legendary George Daniels, Smith’s credentials are without equal. Their partnership was not fleeting; in 1998, Smith joined Daniels to work on the celebrated Millennium series of wristwatches, cementing a collaboration that would shape modern British watchmaking.

When the Millennium project concluded in 2001, Smith stepped out independently, establishing his own workshop alongside Daniels’ on the Isle of Man. There, the first Series 1 took shape—initially housed in a rectangular case, nodding to the then-recently introduced Arkade by A. Lange & Söhne. The original Series 1 featured a retrograde date at 12 o’clock, a flourish later reintroduced in 2015 within the Series 3.

The present Series 3 in pink gold marks a significant moment: the very first example of its kind to appear at international auction, and only the fifth example in pink gold to be made.

Encased within its balanced 40 mm proportions is the combined horological philosophy of Daniels and Smith, expressed with quiet confidence. The solid silver dial is engine-turned by hand, adorned with smitht's signature spade hands, hand-carved Roman numerals, and lettering—details that speak not of industrial process, but of time-honoured craft.

Turn the watch over, and the manually wound calibre is revealed, equipped with Smith’s single-wheel interpretation of Dr. Daniels’ Co-Axial escapement. The plates are hand-engraved, finished in traditional frosted style, with immaculate English finishing throughout. Every bridge, every component, shaped and refined by hand—a testament to Smith’s technical purity and unwavering standards.

For the discerning collector, this is more than a wristwatch. It is a chapter of British watchmaking history: rare, considered, and executed with uncompromising devotion to craft.
