Catalogue Essay
A student of Breguet, Houriet and Arnold, Urban Jürgensen was considered as one of the greatest watchmakers of the 19th century and his style can be found in the watches bearing his name today. In the late 1990s – when the Reference 3 was introduced - Urban Jurgensen – was a power house of technical talent with Derek Pratt and Kari Voutilainen involved in the development and creation of the collections.

Subtle yet important details add up to make the present timepiece a must have for the savvy collector. The hand guilloché dial requires up to 700 different operations and 2 full days to complete. The satin outer track with Roman numerals and simple minute divisions frames the clean guilloché center. The indication for day, date, month and moon phases are symmetrically placed: the windows for day and month horizontally; the subdials for moon phases and date vertically. The tear drop lugs have been individually forged, heat treated, hand polished and individually soldered onto the watch case in a way which makes the soldering line invisible to the naked eye. The moon disc is also made by hand, it is crafted from mirror polished blued steel, in which the stars are manually inlaid in gold and two solid 18 karat gold, mirror polished moons are fitted.

The movement powering this masterpiece is a superbly finished extra slim automatic caliber with a 21k yellow gold guilloché rotor. En evolution of Reference 2, Reference 3 added to the already superb technical prowess of its parent an up/down indicator at 12 o’clock clock under the moon phase display. While aesthetically it is a subtle upgrade, technically it is quite a momentous achievement, as the complication was added without increasing the dimensions of the watch from Ref. 2. The feature required 2 years of development.

Offered in excellent condition with box, Certificate of Origin, and even the original instruction booklet, the present lot is an incredible value proposition for the collector in search of a rare timepiece featuring a superbly executed high complication with refined aesthetics.
