Good To Know:
- Automatic, center seconds
- Made in 12 examples, of which this in no. 7
- It is a celebration of Freedom and the American Dream
- Offered in practically mint condition and full set
Rarely has a watchmaker had such an influence on his peers as Vianney Halter has—he took the world by surprise in 1998 with his incredibly original and unusual Antiqua perpetual calendar, followed by the Opus 3, which was developed with Harry Winston.
The present “Liberty” edition—made in a 12-piece limited edition made for retailer Rostovsky Watches—may be considered a pinnacle of the brand’s production in terms of rarity, design, and, of course, technology.
Inspired by the Statue of Liberty, the watch is filled with small allusions about freedom and the American Dream. The sapphire dial bears a discreet outline of Liberty Island, with its unmistakable 11-point fortification. The numerals are styled from 18th century dollar notes and the dial's color mimic's the collar of the dollar bill as a symbol and instrument of people’s freedom.. The back reads “la liberté éclairant le monde” (freedom will enlighten the world), a quote from the man who originally conceived the Statue of Liberty project—Édouard René de Laboulaye.
Aesthetically, the watch impresses not only for the rich color of the dial and wonderfully executed case (a detail worth noting: the bolts present on the bezel are elegantly reiterated on the crown), but also due to the extensive use of sapphire crystal, which is the choice material not only for the dial—already quite an uncommon choice—but also for the hands! Add to all of that the fact that even the rotor is made out of sapphire (thus allowing for an unobstructed view of the movement), and you obtain an absolutely impressive and highly collectible timepiece.

Vianney Halter
Swiss | 1994Vianney Halter seeks to change how we view time and creates mechanical timepieces with retro-futuristic innovative timekeeping displays. One of his most famous models, the groundbreaking Anitqua, takes inspiration from the nineteenth century with an industrial, steampunk aesthetic, using a case with four separate dial displays that wowed collectors when it was first launched in 1998. For some of Halter's creations, literature — in particular that of Jules Verne — has been a source of inspiration. Halter continues to create futuristic case designs and works with complicated movements.
