Good To Know

- Double balance resonating caliber
- One of only five pieces made for Milan based retailer Pisa

The arrival on the market of a limited edition Chronomètre à Résonance comes with a sense of exhilaration, taking into account that extremely few limited editions were made. The present example, made for the iconic Milan-based retailer Pisa, was produced as a mere 5-piece edition, taking its scarcity to Himalayan heights.

F.P. Journe’s Chronomètre à Résonance represents not only one of modern horology’s technical milestones and one of the most relevant horological breakthroughs of the past decades, but it is also a signature piece by the genius watchmaker. Inspired by the works of the great 18th-century watchmaker Antide Janvier, Journe took up the challenge in 1983 to create a pocket watch using the resonance phenomenon, followed by the first-ever wristwatch to use the phenomenon around 17 years later. The movement is composed of two independent balance wheels; when in motion, the balance wheels create the resonance effect and beat in synchrony, naturally evening out each other’s discrepancies and thus permitting greater accuracy. In 2004, the second generation of the model (the RN series for "Résonance Nouvelle") was launched; it featured a larger 40mm case and an 18K rose gold movement.

Housed in a platinum case with a pink gold movement, the true uniqueness and aesthetic punch come from the white gold dial and dark grey, ruthenium-plated sub-dials with white markings, providing a visually arresting and theatrical effect.

F.P. Journe

Swiss | 1999

Founded by watchmaker François-Paul Journe in 1999, the F.P. Journe brand is relatively young, but already is as highly regarded by collectors as many distinguished manufacturers with centuries-old heritage. In the minds of the world's savviest collectors, Journe is producing some of the finest wristwatches the market has ever seen. Mastering his craft from restoring historical timepieces, he was the first to create a wristwatch incorporating two escapements that benefit from the phenomenon of resonance — the Chronomètre à Résonance.

Key models include the Résonance, tourbillon wristwatches incorporating a remontoir and the limited edition Vagabondage series. Especially sought-after are his earliest "souscription" watches, made in 1999.
