Catalogue Essay
Like the series of Give & Take, the suite of nine Zeno at 4 A.M. prints emerged alongside the theatre production Zeno at 4 a.m.. I was interested in the different visual qualities produced by working with different print studios and on different types of paper; Give & Take was printed by Malcolm Christian at The Caversham Press in South Africa, Zeno at 4am by Maurice Payne in New York. The different working process of each printer results in a distinctive visual language for each series, although they were produced using similar intaglio techniques. - William Kentridge, in David Krut, William Kentridge Prints, 2004, p. 118
