In 1956, Carl Siembab opened his gallery on Newbury Street in Boston, Massachusetts. Only a few years later, he dedicated his curatorial efforts to solely photography. At a time when the medium was still considered to be fledging in the fine-art market, Siembab created an intimate space in which to encounter works by American icons, such as Minor White, Edward Weston, and as evidenced by this lot, Ansel Adams. An eager champion of image-making until his passing in 2007, Siembab is remembered as an integral mentor in the post-World War II photography community. Wood and Weathered Whitewash, Near Point Arena, California, 1928 was gifted to the present owner by Siembab and the back of the mount features a warm inscription from the beloved gallerist.
