Geneva Watch Days: A Watch Enthusiast’s Guide to Geneva

Geneva Watch Days: A Watch Enthusiast’s Guide to Geneva

The ultimate horological pilgrimage.

The ultimate horological pilgrimage.

By Logan Baker

There’s no other way to put it: Geneva is a watch collector's paradise, the very heartbeat of haute horlogerie.

It’s the cradle of Swiss watchmaking, the home of watchmakers large and small, and a city that exudes a timeless elegance that befits its reputation.

Every street corner, boutique, and café whispers stories of horological history. If you find yourself in Geneva – and if you’re a true aficionado, you must – allow me (an American expat recently relocated to Geneva) to guide you through the ultimate watch lover’s itinerary before Geneva Watch Days opens its doors.

Where to Stay

Start your horological adventure with a stay at Hotel La Réserve Geneva. Tucked away on the shores of Lake Geneva, this luxurious hideaway feels like a private retreat. Its understated elegance and serene setting make it the perfect spot to reflect on your collection while gazing out over Mont Blanc. The spa isn’t just a spa; it’s a place to recover from the excitement of a day spent watch-hunting.

For those who prefer to be closer to the action, the Hotel President Wilson is an ideal choice. Situated right on the Quai Wilson, it’s a short stroll from many of Geneva’s most celebrated watch boutiques and museums. The President Wilson’s Michelin-starred restaurant and stunning views over Lake Geneva make it an experience in its own right.

If you've followed along with previous editions of our auctions in Geneva (every May and November), you'll know that Hotel La Réserve is where we previously hosted our sales, and as of this year, the Hotel President Wilson is our new home base.

Where to Start

No visit to Geneva for a watch lover would be complete without stepping into the hallowed halls of the Patek Philippe Museum. Nestled in the Plainpalais district, this temple of horology houses some of the most exceptional timepieces ever created. You'll find everything from early pocket watches to stunningly complicated wristwatches, and even rare horological artifacts dating back to the 16th century. Set aside at least half a day for your visit; trust me, you’ll need it to absorb the rich history and craftsmanship on display.

If you stop by the museum on a Saturday, don’t miss the Plainpalais Flea Market. You never know what you might find — from vintage timepieces and pocket watches to old watchmaker tools. You'll find all sorts of interesting vintage watches among other goods, and it’s a chance to test your horological knowledge and negotiation skills.

Less than a kilometer away from the flea market, and before you cross the Arve river, head over to the Hans Wilsdorf Bridge (Pont Hans-Wilsdorf). Gifted by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation to the city of Geneva, it was finished in 2012 and sits right in front of the majestic Rolex headquarters.

Boutique Hopping: The Patek Philippe Salon and Beyond

After experiencing the Patek Philippe Museum, make your way to the brand's flagship store, the Patek Philippe Salon on Rue du Rhône. This is not just a store — it’s a cathedral of horology. The salon offers an unrivaled selection of Patek Philippe timepieces, including rare limited editions and museum pieces that aren’t available anywhere else.

From here, explore the myriad of other high-end watch boutiques along Rue du Rhône. Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, Rolex, Jaeger-LeCoultre, F.P. Journe, IWC — all of the greats are within walking distance. Each brand has its own unique personality and style, and walking through their boutiques feels like stepping into a different world.

And if you find yourself in Geneva this week for Geneva Watch Days, make sure and stop by our office at Rue de la Confédération 7, where we'll be hosting collectors from Thursday, August 29, to Saturday, August 31, 2024, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Sights to See: A Stroll by the Jet d'Eau and Old Town

Take a break from the boutiques and head over to Geneva’s most famous landmark, the Jet d'Eau. This monumental water fountain, shooting up to 140 meters, is a powerful reminder of Geneva’s vibrant spirit. A stroll along the lakeshore offers not only stunning views but also a peaceful respite from the bustling city center. Not far away is the iconic l’Horloge Fleurie – the Flower Clock – which is maintained by Patek Philippe.

From there, wander into the Old Town of Geneva. The winding cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and hidden courtyards are charming and evocative of the city’s rich past. Here, you’ll find antique shops, small galleries, and the legendary Les Armures — an intimate, traditional Swiss restaurant where you can indulge in fondue and raclette, paired with a glass of local white wine. As you wander the streets, you'll notice a number of independent watchmaking workshops, including Rexhep Rexhepi's Akrivia

A Quick Detour: Carouge

For those who appreciate a more bohemian atmosphere, make your way to Carouge, a small neighborhood just outside the city center. Carouge has an almost Mediterranean feel with its colorful buildings, artisan workshops, and bohemian vibe. It's a great place to explore vintage boutiques and cafes. You may just find a hidden gem. There’s even a charming park honoring Louis Cottier (Parc Louis-Cottier), the 20th century watchmaker famous for his world-time innovations.

If you find yourself in Carouge in the evening, stop by Le Chat Noir for a drink to experience a lively atmosphere filled with Geneva locals.

Where to Eat and Drink

Geneva’s dining scene is a melting pot, where local Swiss traditions meet international influences in an ever-evolving culinary landscape. For a city that has long been a crossroads of cultures, Geneva embraces its diversity through a vibrant array of restaurants that cater to every palate.

For a classic Geneva dining experience, Le Relais de l’Entrecôte is a must. This legendary French bistro (an offshoot of the original location in Paris) specializes in one thing and one thing only: steak frites. The perfectly cooked steak, served with their secret house sauce, is a local favorite. Paired with a crisp salad and a glass of red or a cold beer, it’s a simple yet unforgettable meal.

When it comes to international flavors, Geneva does not disappoint. Luigia is a local favorite for authentic Italian cuisine, where the wood-fired pizzas are as delicious as they are Instagram-worthy. The vibe is lively, and the setting is perfect for a casual yet satisfying meal. For lovers of Mexican cuisine, El Catrin offers a vibrant escape with its modern take on traditional dishes. The tacos, ceviche, and creative cocktails are best enjoyed in their colorful, festive atmosphere that channels the spirit of Mexico City.

For those seeking something more refined, head to Izumi at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues, where Japanese-Peruvian Nikkei cuisine is elevated to an art form. Perched on a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of Lake Geneva, Izumi is a feast for both the eyes and the taste buds. Their sashimi, ceviche, and creative sushi rolls blend fresh ingredients with bold flavors, making it an ideal spot for a special evening.

Geneva also has its share of hidden gems. Mafalda Tavola Calda is a delightful little Italian trattoria that feels like dining in a nonna’s kitchen. The homemade pasta and sandwiches, friendly service create an atmosphere of genuine comfort. Another cozy spot, Il Mirtillo, is known for its exquisite Italian specialties, with a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients — a true neighborhood favorite that makes you feel like a local.

For a taste of Geneva’s old-world charm, don’t miss Brasserie Lipp on Rue de la Confédération. This classic Parisian-style brasserie has been serving up French comfort food with Swiss flair for decades, and it’s the perfect place to people-watch while enjoying a plate of oysters or a rich boeuf bourguignon. Nearby, Restaurant Les Armures offers a quintessentially Swiss dining experience in the heart of the Old Town. Set within one of Geneva’s oldest buildings, it’s the place to go for fondue, raclette, and other Alpine specialties in a cozy, historic setting.

For a meal with a view, make a reservation at Le Petit Lac in Corsier-Port, just outside Geneva. Overlooking the lake, this intimate restaurant is beloved for its seafood dishes, especially the fresh filets de perche (a Swiss speciality!) from Lake Geneva. The serene setting and impeccable service make it a perfect spot for a leisurely lunch or a romantic dinner.

We can't forget F.P. Journe's recently opened Le Restaurant. It's an absolute must visit for any collector.

Finally, if what you fancy is a casual but traditional Swiss fondue, go to Bain des Pâquis, where the locals come to sunbathe and take a dip at the first decent ray of sunlight. Don’t expect Michelin star service, but it’s one of the most authentic places in the city.

Welcome to Geneva!

Geneva is not just the home of great watches; it’s a place that understands the passion and artistry behind them. It’s a city that wears its history proudly and knows how to make you feel a part of it. For collectors, it offers an unparalleled opportunity to immerse oneself in the world of fine watches, from browsing the latest creations in luxurious boutiques to exploring the rich history preserved in its museums. But Geneva is also a city of culture, cuisine, and natural beauty, offering something for every traveler.

So whether you're here for a few days or a week, make sure to lose yourself in its streets, linger in its boutiques, and let the spirit of Geneva remind you why you fell in love with watchmaking in the first place.
