“Fountain of Diamonds” Ring
“Fountain of Diamonds” is an artistic ring by high jeweller Feng J, expressing the unique design of a fountain.
The inspiration originates from Feng J’s time in Paris, specifically when she wanders amongst the city’s numerous fountains, many of which are influenced by the great Belle Epoque style, with nature-inspired Art Nouveau motifs.
In lot 648, Feng J captures the vibrant, yet graceful, arches of these iconic Parisian fountains. In total, 95 bubbling diamond beads form the ring that makes up the fountain’s limpid jet of water, while the impressive 22.08 carat, D colour, diamond sits atop as the calm pool into which it flows.
The effect created is one of a paradoxically minimalist style, while giving a dazzling impact. Creating such a look presented a number of unique challenges for Feng J’s atelier team, who took hundreds of hours of precise craftsmanship to bring this jewel to life.
One such challenge was the painstaking task of finding the perfect size and shaped diamond beads that met Feng J’s aesthetic requirements. These were for the purpose of designing a highly unusual spiral ring, wrapping around the finger, graduating from small to big, then big to small, thereby replicating the movement and form of the Parisian fountains.
Lot 648 is a fine example of a striking, original design, that offers an important and rare 22.08 carat brilliant-cut diamond, set in a unique jewel handcrafted by one of the world’s most exciting contemporary jewellery designers.
A rising star in the international High Jewellery firmament, Feng J is the youngest, and most dynamic designer-jeweller to emerge from mainland China. She studied product and furniture design at the China Academy of Art, where she was tutored by Pritzker prize-winning master architect Wang Shu. Next, she graduated with a Master’s Degree in Jewelry Design from the University of the Arts, London, followed by an intensive course in European craftsmanship at the Haute École de Joaillerie in Paris. She completed her training by studying gemology at GIA. She established Feng J Haute Joaillerie in Paris in 2016, and today her creations are designed in her studio in Shanghai and crafted in her Paris atelier. Feng has injected youthful vivacity, lightness, and fluidity into High Jewellery through her innovative ‘floating’ settings, double-rose cut gemstones, hand-painting on precious metal, and modern interpretations of romantic, classic themes.
