Exploring its texture, depth, and luminosity, painter Alteronce Gumby conceives of color differently than most. Gumby destabilizes the objectivity of light and color as he applies pigment to his canvasses in luscious folds, often with his hands, to investigate the self and challenge accepted notions of color, race, and identity. His abstract paintings analyze the meaning of color and the effects of changing conditions on the way we experience it; often incorporating ground glass into his paints to distort light’s effect, Gumby questions the primacy of objectivity, dissolves the emotions and experiences that we associate with certain colors, and invites viewers to reconsider the constructs that govern their lives.
