André Brasilier is a French painter and printmaker whose lyrical, dream-like paintings blend abstraction and expressionism. Real-life subjects are transposed into fantastical worlds bathed in soft delicate light. Brasilier draws aesthetic and philosophical inspiration from Japanese ukiyo-e prints, with his paintings often featuring pastoral scenes, the sea, women and horses. Horses have been described by Brasilier as "a superb creation...charged with symbolism, strength, dynamism and beauty", and they feature prominently in his oeuvre, their elegant forms depicted cantering through serene seascapes, chilly winter woods and brilliant sunsets.
The son of two painters, Brasilier attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris at the age of 20. At the age of 23 he was awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome for painting. He has also been honoured with major retrospectives, including at the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and the Musée Picasso-Château Grimaldi in Antibes. Brasilier works and lives in Paris, France.
