Andy and Dave is an architecture and design studio based in Brooklyn, New York whose concept-driven work explores ideas that they describe as “free from academic or market-imposed constraints.” They have designed two pieces of furniture that explore specific and somewhat-hidden locations in New York City. For their “Wanna go there! (Screen)” (lot 54), they looked to the fireplace designed by Robert Winthrop Chanler that dominates the former loft of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and the original site of the Whitney Museum. The room divider’s form mirrors the sculptural flames of the fireplace which were photographed and printed on vinyl. For their “Where is this? (Bench)” (lot 55), the designers took artist Louise Nevelson’s Chapel of the Good Shepard at Saint Peter’s Church as inspiration; it is almost as if Nevelson’s monochromatic wall sculptures have come loose and transformed into the mobile vinyl-upholstered forms of Andy and Dave’s bench. Describing these two sources of inspiration, Andy and Dave have said, “Both are unsung, culturally significant interiors where the boundaries between art and architecture have been blurred.”

100% of the proceeds will benefit the Office of Intercultural Student Engagement within the Center for Social Equity + Inclusion at the Rhode Island School of Design
