  • Catalogue Essay

Breguet has been synonymous with Haute Horlogerie since the late eighteenth century, when A.L. Breguet set up shop in Paris catering to the timekeeping needs of the most influential representatives of the Parisian - and, after a little while, European - society: entrepreneurs, nobles, crowned heads (most famously, Queen Marie Antoinette which was the intended recipient of what is today considered the most important timepiece ever made: the Breguet Marie Antoinette).

The present timepiece represents a wonderful example of how this century-long tradition of excellence is upheld today, imbued with modern aesthetics, but always true to its roots. Specifically, the exquisite “grand feu” enamel dial follows the aesthetic canons of early Breguet timepieces (most notably, the unusual five minute markers and - obviously - the Breguet numerals); the case as well maintains the ribbed band and lugs design which are typical of Breguet’s style, but offers these detail in a modern 39.5mm incarnation.

Offered in close to “as-new” condition and complete of its original certificate and box, the present timepiece is an unmissable opportunity for the distinguished connoisseur of fine timepieces.

    Breguet

    Swiss • 1775

Established in 1775 by Abraham Louis Breguet, widely considered the greatest watchmaker of all time, the storied brand continues to thrive in the modern era, creating exceptional high-end watches as the Swatch Group's premier prestige brand. Some of the most important and lasting inventions in watchmaking are attributed to Abraham Louis Breguet, including the tourbillon, shock resistance and the use of hammers and gongs employed in nearly all minute repeating watches made since.

Eighteenth and nineteenth century Breguet pocketwatches are especially sought-after by collectors, and many of them were made for the elite of European society, including Napoléon and Marie Antoinette. Key wristwatches from the twentieth century include oversized dress watches, two-register chronographs, triple calendars and Type XX aviator's chronographs made for the French military and civilians.
