  • Catalogue Essay

The apparent simplicity and the elegance of Breguet’s 7727 hides and incredibly cutting edge movement.

Presented in 2012, it was the very first wristwatch on the market using magnets as escapement. To increase the watches accuracy to an impressive – 1 second to +3 seconds a day. Breguet uses a (very) high beat escapement beating at an impressive 72,000 VPH! To achieve this speed and precision the 7727 features magnetic pivots, instead of the balance staff – which holds the balance wheel in place – being held physically, it is actually suspended by high power magnets.

Two end stones with powerful micro-magnets keep the balance staff centered, allowing it to self-adjust when the watch takes a shock. Normally magnetic fields are an enemy to precision and escapements, Breguet addressed the issue as the escapement is in silicon.

The dial is beautifully guilloché as one can expect from Breguet, the continuous seconds are placed at 12 o’clock, and right beside it a small hand makes a complete revolution in 2 seconds, indicating the tenth of a seconds. A power reserve indicator is place gracefully at 5 o’clock.

    Breguet

    Swiss • 1775

Established in 1775 by Abraham Louis Breguet, widely considered the greatest watchmaker of all time, the storied brand continues to thrive in the modern era, creating exceptional high-end watches as the Swatch Group's premier prestige brand. Some of the most important and lasting inventions in watchmaking are attributed to Abraham Louis Breguet, including the tourbillon, shock resistance and the use of hammers and gongs employed in nearly all minute repeating watches made since.

Eighteenth and nineteenth century Breguet pocketwatches are especially sought-after by collectors, and many of them were made for the elite of European society, including Napoléon and Marie Antoinette. Key wristwatches from the twentieth century include oversized dress watches, two-register chronographs, triple calendars and Type XX aviator's chronographs made for the French military and civilians.
