  • Catalogue Essay

Known for its bold use of colours, the famed House of Bulgari always selects gemstones with the most alluring and lively hues for its jewels, introducing a chromatic realm that is at once majestic and pure.
Emeralds, the most prized green gemstone in the world, play an important role in many of Bulgari’s legendary creations. From Elizabeth Taylor, Gina Lollobrigida to Sophia Loren, divas of the 20th century shared a passion for some of the most magnificent emerald jewels ever made by the Italian House. These pieces are mounted with the best Colombian specimens which glow in a lush and vibrant green. Whether it is a ring, a necklace or an extravagant pair of ear pendants, Bulgari often highlights the green gemstone with a generous use of dazzling white diamonds.
Mounted with a 6.38-carat no-oil Colombian emerald that is gently supported by a wreath of pear-shaped diamonds, this ring echoes many of Bulgari’s classic designs. Our attention is naturally drawn to the verdant gem in the centre, which captivates with its powerful and striking green colour, characteristic of top-quality Colombian emeralds.

  • Artist Biography

    Bulgari

    Italian

Originally from Kalarites, Greece, Sotirios Voulgaris emigrated to Rome because of Greece's rising poverty and difficulty separating from the Ottoman Empire. He set foot on Italian soil in 1880 with little money in his pocket and spent the next four years preparing what would go on to become Italy's oldest jewelry company.

In 1884, Bulgari opened its doors to the Italian people with its offering of jewelry and accessories. Bulgari's style takes from traditions in Greek and Roman craftsmanship to elegantly balance volume and subtlety. Later, in the late 1960s, Bulgari bridged classicism and modernity by introducing its seductive, now-iconic Serpenti collection of snake-shaped coil bracelets and watches. It is through its meticulous combination of influences that Bulgari has garnered an international and loyal high-profile clientele, which included Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn. These Hollywood stars have immortalized the house's unique gem-adorned bracelets, necklaces and earrings in rounded forms.
