Introduced in 1998 as part of the esteemed Collection Privée Cartier Paris (CPCP), the Cartier Tank Américaine is a truly exceptional timepiece, celebrated for its rarity, refined craftsmanship, and distinctive design. This particular example is powered by the high-quality manually wound Caliber 430 MC and features the exquisite guilloché dial that has become a hallmark of CPCP watches. Notably, this early CPCP iteration predates the introduction of the rosette motif at the center of the dial, adding to its collectible appeal.

While Cartier’s iconic designs often trace their origins to the early 20th century, the Tank Américaine is a more contemporary creation, first launched in 1989. Designed as a bold, masculine reinterpretation of the legendary Tank Cintrée, the Tank Américaine features a larger, more substantial case—eschewing the Cintrée’s elongated silhouette for a wider, more robust profile that commands attention on the wrist.

The CPCP line, which ran from 1998 to 2008, represented Cartier’s pinnacle of mechanical watchmaking during this period. This exclusive division was dedicated to producing meticulously crafted timepieces with high-grade movements, often developed in collaboration with renowned manufactures such as Piaget, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Frédéric Piguet, and Girard-Perregaux. As a result, CPCP models were produced in extremely limited quantities, with many references limited to just 50 to 100 pieces. Even non-numbered CPCP models were typically restricted to an estimated 250-300 units, ensuring their status as highly coveted collector’s items.

Presented in excellent condition and accompanied by its full suite of accessories, this CPCP Tank Américaine exemplifies the elegance, rarity, and sophistication that define the Collection Privée Cartier Paris. Its timeless design, combined with its historical significance and limited production, makes it a remarkable opportunity for discerning collectors seeking a truly exceptional Cartier timepiece.

    Cartier

    French

With the Constitution of 1848 came a new standard for luxury in France. Founded one year prior by Louis-Francois Cartier, the house of Cartier was one of the first to use platinum in jewelry making. This incredibly expensive material became the stepping-stone for Cartier to experiment in form, mechanisms and attitude. It helped men move from pocket watches to wristwatches, effectively making the watch much more functional and prominent in a man's overall wardrobe.

Cartier did not only touch on functionality. Inspired by a commissioned painting by George Barbier featuring a black panther at the feet of an elegantly bejeweled woman, Cartier began incorporating wild animals in his designs—most notably, Cartier Panthère rings, bangle bracelets and watches. Yet it wasn't until the late 1960s that the house of Cartier debuted their iconic yellow and rose gold LOVE collection, which includes the famous bracelet that only a special screwdriver can open.
