David Gerstein started his artistic career as a figurative painter but, by the end of the 1970s, he had expanded his practice beyond two-dimensional artworks. By excising the main subjects of his paintings and removing the background, he created unique cutout images which stood free in space. Employing primary colours and everyday subject matters in his sculptures, Gerstein has developed a distinctive pop-art style inspired by the likes of Roy Lichtenstein, Tom Wesselmann and David Hockney.

Gerstein has exhibited his artworks globally at galleries such as Ermanno Tedeshi Gallery, Milan, Bruno Gallery, Singapore, and Visual Arts Gallery, Delhi. He has been commissioned to create artworks for numerous public spaces, including in Singapore. Located in the central business district, his monumental outdoor sculpture Momentum is the tallest sculpture in Singapore.
