In Picking Up The Pieces, Jamie Tan investigates the colour wheel, a tool that is still widely used by artists today to understand the relationship between different colours and how they may be applied. He depicts his own version of the wheel with colours that are fractured into myriad tones, creating an image that resembles a shattered surface. By disrupting the colour wheel, Tan aims to communicate the broader concept that rules should have exceptions; rules can be guides but can also limit exploration.
Tan is highly regarded for works that investigate the relative nature of colour. He understands colour as a powerful device, which can influence our feelings, sense of identity and the way we live. Last year, Tan collaborated with Jamie Teo on an exhibition at Art Porters gallery titled Hide & Seek in which they explored their shared interest in colour. Tan has participated in numerous regional art fairs in Singapore and Malaysia.
