'I am greatly influenced by nature and its palette. The DNA of the earth, gems, minerals, meteorites, desert landscapes and hallucinatory states have all taught me about colour and its effects on mood.' - Donna Huanca

At the heart of Donna Huanca’s varied interdisciplinary practice is a convergence of nature and the human body. The artist’s live sculptural pieces are created through a real-time partnership between artist and model. The defiant naked female body is both exposed and concealed using materials such as clay, latex and turmeric, which confront the viewer with an image that is familiar yet distorted. Huanca’s abstract works draw upon the same inherent principles as her performative installations. PEDIALYTE’s shimmering yet arid surface is devoid of recognisable figuration, yet the incisions form a rhythmic web of shapes which recall human touch and gesture, like shapes raked into sand. The cracked surface transports us to a lunar moonscape or desert, the iridescent dream-like palette drawing upon organic materials, the minerals, precious stones and geology which underpin the landscape of the planet we live on.
