In Table for Two, Faris Heizer (b. 1998, Singapore) examines routines shaped by a conformist ecology, born of expectations of the self as well as societal norms. Two waiters are portrayed fumbling over a serving tray, one with their hand outstretched to slow the other’s fall. The painting illustrates a devastatingly comical moment that elicits anxiety, restlessness and tension.
Faris graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore with a Diploma in Fine Arts in 2018. He paints metanarratives of caricatured figures in states of pain, despair and hopelessness. These characters exist in an abject reality ruled by their own logics, appropriated from various fictional novels and cartoon shows.
