Fika Leon, born in 1985, is an Indonesian self-taught artist who currently resides in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. His style draws inspiration from his intimate experiences, his episodic memories, his reflections on identity and sense of place. Characterised by Basquiat-like bold, vivid colours and abstract shapes, Leon’s oeuvre mostly features on the representation of contorted human figures and purposefully distorted faces, which at times distinctly reveal the influence of Indonesian folklore and visual imagery.
According to Jonathan Toh, co-founder of the Singapore-based art gallery All About Art, Leon is one of the most successful examples of a new generation of Southeast Asian artists who manage to “blend seemingly traditional techniques and content with a new interpretation of what contemporary art should be.”i
His latest exhibitions include eponymous solo shows at Kantor Gallery, Beverly Hills, in October 2022, and at Le Mont Art Space in Kaohsiung, Taiwan (10 December 2022 – 10 January 2023), and group exhibition titled Exploration at Popi Gallery in Brussels in April 2022.
