Julia Maiuri - New Now New York Wednesday, March 8, 2023 | Phillips
  • Uncanny and unsettling, Maiuri draws influence from film making techniques and horror movie tropes to create small-scale works imbued with a cinematic quality. Layered imagery at once familiar becomes otherworldly and dream-like on the canvas. Maiuri begins her process through digital collages and overlays the images to create a mysterious quality. In avoiding the literal imagery of the horror genre, Maiuri plays with a Hitchcockian suspense, fading between the imagery, viscerally suggesting a sense of unease.
