Luis Vassallo (Madrid, 1981) holds a degree in Fine Arts from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and in 2006, he enjoyed a scholarship at the HFBK school of Hamburg. His work has been exhibited in art centres, museums and spaces such as; CA2M, Matadero Madrid, La Casa Encendida, Museo Patio Herreriano, LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial and Casa Leibniz. Since 2013, the Espacio Valverde gallery has represented him with four solo exhibitions to date.
His work gravitates towards painting and its history, generating a world full of forms and references driven by a rich plastic imagination. In his work, one can see both a renewal of the avant-gardes, as well as an intimate genealogy of them and their different echoes over time.
Vassallo maintains an intuitive and heterodox attitude towards the plastic arts and the study of art history. He is interested in the relationships between antiquity and the avant-garde, the self-referential nature of painting or its playful capacity to approach the world.
Diving into the very singularity of painting and into that plastic exuberance that the Ismos uncovered, Vassallo continues seeing a medium with the ability to bring together many layers of meaning in a simple way and at the same time endow them with a dimension of physical and emotional richness.
