  • Catalogue Essay

2019 presents a direct graphic response to the migrant crisis and the continuing tragedy of migrants being drowned at sea, the subject of my oil painting 2016 which is held in Tate collection. The titles, 2016, and in this work, 2019, act like a zoom lens, telescopically focusing our attention onto the immediate facts of the image - a particular boat on a doomed journey - and then widening out into symbols, a microcosm of the events that took place, and continue to take place, in the years in which these works were made. Isolated and bereft of coordinates, the boat is an island on the brink of sinking but remains afloat; its inhabitants on the edge of destruction.” - Maggi Hambling
