“I am very attracted to the humour, the banter, the crazy things we all do, the character of the people.”
—Martin Parr on Britain
Born in 1952, Martin Parr became a documentary photographer at an early age, shining a light on the eccentricities of Britain and beyond. Employing a macro lens and a palate of highly saturated colours, Parr places his subjects ‘under the microscope,’ capturing the full array of British life. Parr was celebrated at this year’s edition of Photo London where he was awarded the accolade of Master of Photography. Included in his Photo London exhibition was another example of this image of the quintessentially British seaside town of Brighton from his seminal 1986 book The Last Resort: Photographs of New Brighton. In 2019 the National Portrait Gallery, London, mounted a retrospective exhibition of Parr’s work titled, aptly, Only Human.
