A rare opportunity to dine with Iwona Blazwick OBE and Michael Armitage, one of Britian’s leading painters included in Whitechapel Gallery’s 5-star show Radical Figures: Painting in the New Millenium.
The winning bidder and three guests will get the chance to enjoy an out-of-hours tour of Whitechapel Gallery led by Iwona Blazwick, followed by a three-course dinner and drinks with Michael Armitage in a private dining room at Townsend, Whitechapel Gallery’s critically-acclaimed restaurant.
Michael Armitage will be the subject of a solo exhibition at The Royal Academy of Arts, London this year – and this is an unprecedented opportunity to hear from the artist in an intimate and excluisve setting.
Michael Armitage is a Kenyan-born artist who works between Nairobi and London. His colourful, dream-like paintings weave multiple narratives that are drawn from historical and current news media, internet gossip and his ongoing recollections of Kenya. They address art history, sexuality, politics and civil unrest.
Armitage has been the subject of many solo exhibitions around the world, most recently at Haus Der Kunst, Munich (2020), The Norval Foundation, Cape Town (2020), Project 110 at the Studio Museum in collaboration with MoMA (2019) and the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin (2019).
Townsend restaurant first opened its doors at Whitechapel Gallery in February 2020. Recruiting the talents of Joe Fox, ex-Head Chef of Petersham Nurseries, founder Nick Gilkinson has created a modern British dining room with an evolving menu of creatively constructed seasonal dishes, as well as freshly baked bread and pastries, and wines by the glass. The restaurant is named for Charles Harrison Townsend, the architect of the grade II listed gallery.
In June 2020, Nick launched Town-Send - a UK-wide gourmet at home delivery service. Town-Send offers a selection of seasonal set menus alongside a selection of house made ingredients, condiments and a bottle shop featuring wines and pre-batched cocktails.
In January 2021, the restaurant was awarded a Michelin plate, recognising the quality of their cooking when the restaurant managed to open during 2020.
Terms and conditions: The winning bidder is entitled to bring three guests to dinner, which includes a cocktail of your choice, a three course meal and wine for the table. The dinner is redeemable between March 2021 and January 2022, to be arranged at a mutually convenient time via Whitechapel Gallery.
