    - The Omega Speedmaster ref. 145.012-67 was in production throughout 1968 with around 3000 pieces, ranging from a serial of 26.076.XXX to 26.079.XXX. As a handful of this reference was assembled with a distinctive orange chronographic hand, the rare bird is now famously known as the original “Ultraman Speedmaster” thanks to its appearance on the Japanese sensation, "The Return Of Ultraman”. Extremely scarce, only under 50 examples with this striking configuration are known to the market.

    - The story begins when a super being (Ultraman) accidentally collides with and kills a member of Earth’s Science Special Search Party (SSSP), Shin Hayata. In an effort to right this wrong, Ultraman merges his own life force with the human and pledges to become Earth’s ultimate protector. Hataya transforms into the 40m tall, super-powered giant when he is called to battle monsters threatening the planet. His crested head and large, intimidating eyes became instantly iconic, as did his orange and silver livery. However, this benevolent alien could only fight for three minutes before his energy was depleted. In 1971, according to Omega, the producers of Ultraman Returns selected Omega’s "Moonwatch" as part of the Monster Attack Team’s monster-fighting kit.

    - In honour of the highly sought-after original, the present Speedy Tuesday Ultraman was launched in 2012 and is almost identical to its predecessor. In addition to the orange center seconds hand, the reissue is complimented with a black and orange tachymetric bezel, and orange hour markers. Furthermore, the “Speedmaster” signature is stamped in a matching orange hue instead of white. Another tribute to the TV series is the sneaky imprint of Ultraman's head in the small seconds register at 9 o’clock. This hidden feature is most prominent under UV light. Its wearer is invited to use the complimentary 2-in-1 UV light and retractable spring bar-removal pen that comes with the watch, modelled after the "Beta Capsule", which Ultraman's human host used to transform into the superhero. A final shout-out to the original series is the minutes register, where the first three minutes are marked in orange, reflecting the 3-minute restraint on Ultraman's powers.

    - As a nod to the original Ultraman Speedmaster, the bezel on the present model is fitted with a “dot over 90” bezel, used in pre-1970s Speedmasters. To complete the vintage aesthetic, Omega has included both a black and orange NATO strap, and a leather strap with orange stitching.

    - Offered at PHILLIPS for the first time, the present ref. 311.12.42.30.01.001 numbered 1,235 of a limited edition of 2,012, delivered in “new-old-stock" condition and accompanied by its original accessories.

  • Artist Biography

    Omega

    Swiss • 1848

Omega's rich history begins with its founder, Louis Brandt, who established the firm in 1848 in La Chaux de Fonds. In 1903, the company changed its name to Omega, becoming the only watch brand in history to have been named after one its own movements. A full-fledged manufacturer of highly accurate, affordable and reliable watches, its sterling reputation enabled them to be chosen as the first watch company to time the Olympic Games beginning in 1932. Its continued focus on precision and reliability ultimately led their Speedmaster chronograph wristwatch to be chosen by NASA in 1965 — the first watch worn on the moon.

Key models sought-after by collectors include their first, oversized water-resistant chronograph — the reference 2077, early Speedmaster models such as the CK 2915 and 2998, military-issued versions of the Seamaster and oversized chronometer models such as those fitted with their prestigious caliber 30T2Rg.
