  • Catalogue Essay

While today’s collectors most often associate Patek Philippe with exceptional wristwatches, in particular those with complications, the firm’s history, which began in 1839, has long excelled in artistic representations like the present multi-chrome enamel pocket watch to the present day. The tradition of “bell horologerie” or “beautiful watchmaking” pairs skilled watchmakers with craftsmen specializing in engraving, enameling and gem-setting. Patek Philippe worked with the most highly skill artisans resulting in works of art like the present timepiece. The flowers are artistically rendered with a life like quality and appeal in vibrant and bright hues and tones all set against a garnet enamel background. Owning an enamel pocket watch is to own part of the history of Patek Philippe. The tradition continues to this day with the firm producing very limited numbers of enamel pocket watches and dome clocks, rendered by some of the most important names in 20th century enameling, like Suzanne Rohr and G. Menni.
