The repeat mechanism is one of the most charming of all the complications found in horology today. A simple ordinary looking timepiece is made magical by the addition of gongs and hammers allowing one to hear the chiming of the time reminiscent of days gone by with striking clocks. Patek Philippe has always been at the forefront of development and their repeat mechanisms are honed to a high degree assuring a rich clear tone. A marvel to watch when striking, the movement becomes both a work of art and a tool.
The present watch is a fine example of Patek Philippe’s skill with the quarter repeating mechanism having a clear tone when the watch is activated. The watch is enhanced by the rare 24-hour dial with an inner track to 12 o’clock, and an out track calibrated to 24. It is interesting to note that a minute repeating pocket watch with the movement number 111’538 has a similar dial layout, however the outer 24 calibration is featured in red. The watch has a clean modern aesthetic and while functionally a pocket watch is not as convenient as a wristwatch, a repeating wristwatch is a joy to handle and listen to and are watches that all collectors can appreciate.
