  • Catalogue Essay

At the beginning of 2020, Rolex brightened up the Oyster Perpetual offerings with the launch of a vibrant array of models featuring a series of brightly coloured lacquer dials as a subtle homage to the iconic “Stella” dials from the past. Launched in three different sizes, 41mm (ref. 123400), 36mm (ref. 126000) and 31mm (ref. 277200), the lacquered dials were made available in the following colours, yellow, green, coral red, tiffany blue and pink (only for ref. 126000). Immediately making an impact on the first day of its launch, the model has since become one of the most sought-after Rolex sports model in recent times.

Featuring arguably the most desirable color amongst the selection in “Tiffany” blue, the present example is the 36mm variant offered by the original owner. Interestingly, this “Tiffany” blue Oyster Perpetual is unlike any other with a characteristic to notice. While the Oyster Perpetual is known to be certified with the chronometer certification indicated at 6 o’clock for excellence, a small detail or “mistake” on the typography on the “U” of Superlative appears slightly shorter than the rest of the text. Likely to be an oversight or known to the community as an “error” dial, this Oyster Perpetual certainly stands out from its peers. With the announcement just this spring of the discontinuation of the short lived "Tiffany" blue 41mm variant, the present Oyster Perpetual 36mm is still in production, but yet speculated for how much longer before its discontinuation. Presented in excellent overall condition example, this is a chance for collectors to acquire an unusual example right now.

  • Artist Biography

    Rolex

    Swiss • 1905

Founded in 1905 England by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis as Wilsdorf & Davis, it soon became known as the Rolex Watch Company in 1915, moving its headquarters to Geneva in 1919. Like no other company, the success of the wristwatch can be attributed to many of Rolex's innovations that made them one of the most respected and well-known of all luxury brands. These innovations include their famous "Oyster" case — the world's first water resistant and dustproof watch case, invented in 1926 — and their "Perpetual" — the first reliable self-winding movement for wristwatches launched in 1933. They would form the foundation for Rolex's Datejust and Day-Date, respectively introduced in 1945 and 1956, but also importantly for their sports watches, such as the Explorer, Submariner and GMT-Master launched in the mid-1950s.

One of its most famous models is the Cosmograph Daytona. Launched in 1963, these chronographs are without any doubt amongst the most iconic and coveted of all collectible wristwatches. Other key collectible models include their most complicated vintage watches, including references 8171 and 6062 with triple calendar and moon phase, "Jean Claude Killy" triple date chronograph models and the Submariner, including early "big-crown" models and military-issued variants.
