Son of the legendary Filipino modernist artist Mauro Malang Santos, Soler Santos was exposed to art from a young age and has become an influential voice within the Filipino contemporary art scene in his own right. Santos has always been fascinated with depicting the natural world in his artworks, especially nature in the process of breakdown and decay. Using earthy, subdued hues and the ochre colour favoured by the artist, El Nido Series demonstrates Santos’s tendency for abstraction during the later years of his career.
Santos was only 21 when he presented his first solo exhibition at Luz Gallery in Makati City. He went on to receive numerous awards for his work, including the coveted Thirteen Artists Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1992. As well as creating and exhibiting his own works in numerous key galleries and museums, he also runs West Gallery in Manila with his wife and fellow artist, Mona Santos.
