  • Catalogue Essay

Beginning in 2010, Tudor looked to their past and began to release 21st-century wristwatches that had a distinct vintage feel and were modelled in part on timepieces from the past. The Heritage collection began with the Heritage Chronograph, followed by the Heritage Advisor Alarm, and in 2012 the Heritage Black Bay, reference 7922R, that took its inspiration from Tudor’s historical past like the 1954 Submariner as well as other vintages classics.

The present model, reference 79230R, is the next generation of the Heritage Black Bay with this example featuring a rare gilt State of Qatar dial. While there is very little known about the State of Qatar edition, some online research indicates that the watches were made for the Qatar military in three batches for a total of 150 examples. There are no known production numbers and when asked about it, one is told only the numbers are very very low. The watch is in excellent overall condition and is an opportunity to own a very rare Tudor.

    Tudor

    Swiss • 1926

Almost twenty years after Rolex was founded, Hans Wilsdorf established Tudor with the intention of making more affordable watches without compromising the quality for which Rolex was renowned. Tudor was named after the British Dynasty that ruled England from 1485 to 1603, and their symbol came from the "War of Roses." After interchanging Rose and Shield symbols for a number of years, the firm replaced the Rose with the Shield logo from the 1960s until today.

Some of the most recognized vintage models made by Tudor include the Submariner, a waterproof model first introduced in 1954, the Oysterdate, the earliest versions of which were nicknamed the "Monte-Carlo," the Heritage, which included the date at 6 o'clock, as well as the Pelagos, which translates to "deep sea" in Greek.
