Meteor Mash was originally part of the assemblage What Makes a Mountain, in which artist Yeoh Choo Kuan explores shan shui hua, a style of Chinese landscape painting featuring mountains and lakes or rivers. Placing numerous paintings of various sizes, including Meteor Mash, together enabled Yeoh to mimic the layers and rhythm of mountain ridges. The artwork is full-bodied and visceral, a synthesis of dynamic colours that burst across the canvas. To create this effect, Yeoh employed a “paint streaming” technique: paint is dripped onto the canvas from different directions to represent the flow of water.
Yeoh explores the depths of human emotion through painterly abstraction. Whilst Yeoh’s work has largely focused on the visual, his practice has recently expanded to include installation. To date, he has presented five solo exhibitions in both Singapore and Malaysia. Yeoh is represented by Richard Koh Fine Art, Singapore.
