signed in pencil, from the edition of 260 (there were also 50 on larger paper), published by Ambroise Vollard, Paris, printed by Roger Lacourière, 1939, the palest light- and time staining, occasional very pale stains in the margins near the sheet edges, otherwise in very good condition, framed.

…The bull and horse seem to assume male and female roles. The frenzy is typical of Picasso’s work in the 1930’s, when his personal life as increasingly fraught…the thrown [female] bullfghter has the features of Picasso’s lover Marie-Thérèse Walter. If the charging bull symbolizes the artist, and the tortured horse represents his wife Olga, the painful triangle of Picasso’s life at the time is fully portrayed.
