Seiko does a particularly good job with strong, angular shapes and reliable, sturdy dive watches. This one captures all the above. The rubberized strap is especially well done, too. - Mark Cho

- The series of Seiko 55th Anniversary Diver’s Watches were release in 2020 to celebrate the brand’s inaugural diver’s watches that date back to 1965. The three references—SLA037, SLA039 and SLA041—feature many familiar details inspired by their predecessors, with a modern spin of striking blue dials.
- The present ref. SLA037 is a re-interpretation of the ref. 62MAS, recognised as the official timekeeper for four missions with the Antarctic Team of the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, between 1966 and 1969. Not just a great utility for underwater excursions, the ref. 62MAS is also a high performer on land and had been taken up to Mount Everest as an expedition timer.
- From the texture of the watch’s strap to its chiselled physique, the 2020 anniversary limited edition ref. SLA037 adheres faithfully to its rugged original. Updated with a cool greyish-blue dial, the original luminous material has also been substituted with the significantly brighter LumiBrite that will stay aglow for over 4 hours with just 10 minutes under UV light.
- Encased in stainless steel, the case measures at a staggering 39.9mm which occupies a strong position among Seiko enthusiasts. Powered by a rather more sophisticated cal. 8L55 with a 55-hour power reserve, the re-creation employs a larger, screw-down crown, typical of the later 62MAS watches.
- Numbered 980 of a limited edition of 1100 pieces, the present 1965 Diver’s Re-Creation ref. SLA037 is offered in excellent overall condition and is accompanied by its original accessories. A fantastic reflection of the firm’s mechanical prowess, this tastefully reissued reference will surely please collectors of technically sound and reliable tool watches.
